Incredibly Easy Ice Cream

We doubled this recipe and as you will see it took us a long time to get the ice cream to set up. We found it works much better if you do two small batches rather than one big batch.

Of course we love Organic Valley dairy products because they support Spatulatta and our mission! But we also found that the cream truly does make a difference in the flavor of the ice cream. Organic Valley cows are happy cows. They eat what cows were meant to eat without a bunch of nasty stuff added to it. In turn, the cows make great tasting, organic milk and therefore great tasting cream.

You'll need:

  • 1 cup Organic Valley Cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or cherry, or any other flavor you like)
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • Ice cubes
  • 7 tablespoons of rock salt
  • 2 heavy-duty, zipper-type plastic food storage bags

Equipment:

  • A large plastic jar or coffee can with a tight-fitting lid
  • Gloves or oven mitts
  1. Put the cream, vanilla or other flavoring and sugar into a heavy-duty, zipper-type food storage bag.
  2. Squeeze out as much air out of the bag as you can. Zip the bag shut.
  3. Put that bag into the second bag, push the air out and zip it shut. Now you have a double barrier.
  4. Fill your plastic container or coffee can half full of ice.
  5. Add 6-7 tablespoons of rock salt to the ice. Put the lid on your container and shake to mix.
  6. Open your container and put your zipped bag of creamy stuff inside.
  7. Now seal the jar or can up, and go crazy! Roll it all over the floor. Toss it back and forth to each other, really shake it up!
  8. Shaking keeps ice crystals from forming in the cream as it freezes and gives the nice, smooth texture we all love in ice cream.
  9. After 8 or so minutes of constant movement, you'll have 2 or 3 servings of the best ice cream you've ever tasted. And, you made it yourself!
