The Hoisin sauce gives the squash a sweet nutty flavor! You can
buy Hoisin sauce at Asian groceries and many health food stores.
You'll need:
6 bamboo skewers - soaked in water
2 medium sized yellow squash
2 medium sized zucchini squash
Hoisin sauce
Adult help for using the grill
Equipment:
A butter knife
Sauce brush or a brand new paintbrush
A small bowl
A hibachi or barbecue grill
Oven mitts
Cut the squash into 1 inch thick rounds.
Carefully put the chunks of squash on the skewers.
Pour the Hoisin sauce into a small bowl. Use the brush to
coat the squash on all sides. Lay the skewers on a plate and
carry them out to the barbecue.
Ask Dad or whoever is working the grill to find you a place
to lay the skewers where they are near the heat but not over
the direct flame. You want the squash to cook slowly without
burning the Hoisin sauce. Have Dad put the skewers down so the
end that isn't sharp is hanging off the grill.
If you have permission to help, put your oven mitts on and
turn the skewers every few minutes so the squash gets cooked
on all sides. You have to be careful because the not only the
top but also the sides of the barbecue will be very hot.
The squash will get softer as it cooks. You want it cooked
through but not so much that it falls off the skewer.
When the squash is tender and slightly browned all around,
get the serving plate and hold it while Dad takes the squash
off the grill.
