Kitty Litter Cake Print E-mail

This is the signature recipe from the Gross Out Cakes cookbook! It looked so real we were all laughing so hard. Eeeeww!!

The cake is really fun for birthday parties. Imagine your friends sitting at the table eagerly awaiting birthday cake and mom comes sailing out of the kitchen and plops "the cat pan" on the table. Your friends will scream!

The cake is really yummy - once you get past its looks.

Thank you authors Kathleen Barlow and Britney Schetselaar for your quirky sense of humor. We really enjoyed working with your cookbook!

{Makes 1 cake}

You'll need:

  • 1 spice or German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 white cake mix
  • 1 large package of vanilla instant pudding mix
  • Ingredients called for on the 3 packages
  • 2 boxes of vanilla wafers
  • Green food coloring
  • 12 small Tootsie Rolls

  • Cake pans – any size will work
  • Various sized bowls
  • Measuring cups
  • A microwave safe dish
  • 1 NEW kitty litter pan*
  • 1 NEW pooper scooper*
  1. Prepare the cake mixes according to the instructions on the packages. When they’re done baking set them aside to cool.
  2. Prepare the pudding mix according to the directions on the package and refrigerate.
  3. Crush the cookies. The food processor works best even though it was our last resort when we couldn’t resist trying to smash them by hand.
  4. Measure out 1/4 cup of crumbs. Add a few drops of green food coloring to them, mix until completely colored and set aside.
  5. When the cakes are cool, crumble them into the clean kitty litter pan. Add half of the cookie crumbs. Drop globs of pudding around the pan and gently toss the ingredients just until the cake is moist.
  6. Unwrap the Tootsie Rolls. Put 3 in the microwave-safe dish and zap until they are slightly soft - for about 10 seconds. Mold the Tootsie Rolls to look like cat poop. Push them slightly under the surface of the cake. Repeat with the next 3.
  7. Take the rest of the cookie crumbs and scatter them across the top of the cake. Sprinkle the green crumbs over everything. This is the “chlorophyll” in the “kitty litter.”
  8. Heat up the last 6 Tootsie Rolls in the microwave. Shape them and arrange them on top of the cake. If you want to be really gross, you can drape one of them over the side of the box. Anyone who has cats will recognize this!
  9. Serve and listen to the howls of disgust and delight!

* Please do not use a cat pan or scooper that has been used before. No matter how much you scrub you can still get really, really sick!
