The Sparkling Egg tree makes a wonderful centerpiece for your Easter table. The eggs are real eggshells that have had the yoke and white blown out of them.

Remember, you will be handling raw eggs. Blow out--don't ever suck in! And wash your hands well after handling them.

Once you've blown out all your eggs, be thrifty. Use these eggs to make the Brunch Casserole.

{Makes 1 tree}

You'll need:

  • A bare branch with twigs - about 1 1/2 feet long
  • 8 raw eggs
  • 8 inch clay pot
  • A plastic grocery bag
  • Sand or sugar
  • Decorative rocks
  • Craft glue
  • Glitter, sequins or rhinestones
  • A bamboo skewer
  • Thread
  • A little adult help

Equipment:

  • A medium-sized bowl
  • A big thick needle
  • 2 paper plates
  • Paper towels


      1. Start by checking to see that the grocery bag has no holes in it. Line the inside of the clay pot with it.
      2. The next part is a great two person job. Ask your aunt or whoever is helping you to pour the sand into the pot while you hold the bag open. Once the sand is in place, trim the bag, leaving about 1 1/2 inches of bag showing around the edge of the pot.
      3. Arrange the branch in the pot like a little tree. Fold the edges of the plastic bag in over the top of the bag and cover with decorative rocks.
      4. Wash the outside of the eggs to make sure they are clean.
      5. Lay out a paper towel on a paper plate to hold your empty egg shells.
      6. Using the needle, poke a 1/8 inch hole in the small end of an egg. Make a slightly larger whole in the bottom of the egg. Be sure to break the membrane inside the shell otherwise the egg won't come out.
      7. Hold the egg over the bowl with the small end up. Blow into the hole. Blow hard! The egg will come streaming out of the hole in the bottom.
      8. Cover the bowl with the eggs with plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator as soon as you can. Save them to make the Brunch Casserole.
      9. Run water through the empty egg shells to clean them out. Set them on the plate to dry.
      10. When you have emptied all the shells and rinsed them, pour your sequins and glitter into the clean plate.
      11. Use the glue to make swirly designs on the dry egg shells, then roll the eggs in the glitter or paste the sequins on individually.
      12. While the glue is setting, cut 4 inch lengths of thread and cut 8 1/2 inch pieces of bamboo skewer.
      13. Ask your aunt to make a loop of the thread and tie it to a piece of skewer.
      14. Gently insert the skewer into the top hole of the egg and let it fall a little way inside. Pull the string and the egg will now have a hanger.
      15. Arrange the sparkling eggs on the branch and your egg tree is complete.
